February 10, 2015

The James A. Michener Art Museum is pleased to announce that “Over at Byram” by renowned 20th century painter, Daniel Garber from Lumberville, Pa., is on loan to the State Museum of Pennsylvania in Harrisburg. It was selected for the Inaugural Exhibit of the Pennsylvania Arts organized by Governor Tom Wolf's Inaugural Committee. The exhibition, which opened for Governor Wolf's inauguration this month, features the work of notable Pennsylvania artists from the past and present.
The Garber painting was a gift to the Michener Art Museum from Oliver Pearson and is from the museum's permanent collection. Garber was a member of the faculty of the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, and throughout the four decades of his tenure at the Academy, he exerted a strong influence on generations of students. The exhibit will be free and open to the public at the State Museum through Sunday, Feb. 15.
"The activities at the State Museum of Pennsylvania were a great way to celebrate the inauguration of our 47th governor of Pennsylvania and our state's cultural gifts," said Wolf Inaugural Committee co-chair Reid Walsh. "The Inaugural Exhibit of the Pennsylvania Arts is a fantastic opportunity to showcase the vast amount of artistic talent in our commonwealth. First Lady Frances Wolf is not only a collector but also a painter herself. She recognizes the vitality, diversity and excellence of the visual arts of Pennsylvania. Governor Wolf is an avid arts advocate, being one of the founders of the Cultural Alliance of York County," stated Walsh.
The Pennsylvania Council on the Arts provided the Inaugural Committee with a list of Pennsylvania museums and organizations to submit works for consideration. The Wolf Inaugural Committee selected from more than 150 submitted pieces. The resulting exhibition presents works by artists from communities all across the state.
Along with the Michener Museum's work by Daniel Garber, other notable Pennsylvania artists represented in the exhibition are Richard Anuszkiewicz, Cecilia Beaux, Charles Demuth, Thomas Eakins, William Glackens, Charles "Teenie" Harris, Violet Oakley, Horace Pippin, Edward Redfield, Charles Sheeler, John Sloan, Gilbert Stuart, Andy Warhol, Benjamin West and Andrew Wyeth.
