Three Days Of Sales Loaded With Unique Offerings At Pook & Pook

April 14, 2016

Pook & Pook Inc. in Downingtown, Pa., is having three days of auctions on Friday, Saturday, and Monday, April 22, 23, and 25. Boasting something for bidders of all interests, the sale starts with a Friday evening sale of international highlights, followed by Saturday's much-anticipated Americana sale, and concluding with an online decorative arts auction on Monday. All auctions can be previewed simultaneously the week prior, allowing visitors to appreciate the breadth of Pook & Pook Inc.'s topical range over the course of one viewing.
A Friday evening reception will conclude a week of gallery preview exhibitions, which will flow into the main event of the night, an over 200-lot specialty sale of international items. Asian decorative arts are well-represented in this sale, particularly examples of Chinese porcelain. Quality artwork will also be sold Friday night, including a fine oil-on-canvas of three hunting dogs from the school of Edwin Landseer.
Saturday's Americana auction places further emphasis on fine art. Pieces of note include a Hobson Pittman oil-on-board, titled "The Garden," and an Edward Hicks oil-on-canvas landscape exhibited at the Princeton University Art Museum during their American Art from the Class of 1953 Collection show.
From fine to folk art, the fraktur of Johann Adam Eyer and Johann Conrad Gilbert add interest, as does a watercolor by Jacob Maentel. Maentel's portrait of John George Kitzmiller of York County and his wife, Anna Christina, features the two in blue ladderback chairs with a courting mirror between them, and was once exhibited by the Historical Society of York County (now called York County Heritage Trust).
Several noteworthy lots of regional furniture are included. Among the highlights will be a vibrantly-painted Somerset County, Pa. poplar blanket chest, ca. 1850, attributed to Jacob Knagy, an Albert Abelt of Cumberland County, Pa., carved and painted pine box, ca. 1963, and a fine Pennsylvania tiger maple schrank, ca. 1780, with raised tombstone panel doors and a five-drawer base.
Pook & Pook Inc. is also proud to feature the collection of renowned York, Pa. cabinetmaker Frank Auspitz and his wife Frances, which includes several of Auspitz's original pieces.
The Monday auction is an online-only sale offered on www.Bidsquare.com.
