March 11, 2015

Witman Auctioneers Inc. of Manheim, Pa., conducted a public auction on Feb. 28, at the Gathering Place in Mount Joy, Pa., for Al and Elaine Baum, the Mary McCommon estate, and several other Lancaster County consignors.
There was a crowd of over 400 people with 248 bidder numbers registered. Some of the items sold were as follows: an Edison phonograph with horn sold for $660, a small sandstone splash block sold for $550, a red satin “Gone with the Wind” lamp realized $495, and a Bonanza apple peeler sold for $470. Prices include buyer’s premium. Several other items sold were a blacksmith anvil for $410; a softwood drysink, $330; a sword with sheath, $305; a pair of 1913 auto license plates, $280; a table top jukebox for $250, and a Frosty Root Beer thermometer for $165. “It was a very successful sale,” said Clarke Witman.
The star of the day was a rare grouping of four cannon pattern blue spatterware cups and saucers, which sold to the trade for $23,100. The china almost didn’t make it to the sale, due to being earmarked for the trash. “We cleaned out a house in Lancaster floor-to-ceiling, and as we went through a box in the garage that had trash in it found the cups and saucers. Thank goodness the family didn’t throw it away before we got there,” said Witman.
