1930s China Pattern

May 23, 2012

This week’s item is a Shelley China ‘Wild Flowers’ pattern service. It dates from circa 1930s.
It comprises twenty-seven pieces.
Shelley is a British factory. They made good quality china at their Longton, Staffordshire factory from the late Victorian period (formerly known as Wileman), and your service was made during the 1930's (although many people carried on collecting services as and when they could afford it, or for an anniversary etc.) Services in general are difficult to sell as people don't use them or display them any more, and so prices have fallen drastically over the past few years. Shelley china is collectible, but collectors prefer white high art deco geometric designs on moderne shapes (such as conical cups with solid triangular handles), and so this more traditional design and shape is not as sought after, although the fashion for vintage style (Cath Kidston and 'Kirsty') is starting to push prices up again.
We valued the service at $200 to $250.
