Old World Meets New School At Cordier's Winter Antique And Fine Art Auction

John Cocteau’s “Picasso de 1916 a 1961” will be among the expected top lots at Cordier’s Winter Antique and Fine Art Auction. The sale will be held on Saturday, Feb. 11, at 1500 Paxton St., in Harrisburg, Pa. The catalog sale will also include American and Continental furniture, Sterling, fine clocks, jewelry, and more. Previews for the sale will be held on Friday, Feb. 10, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Saturday, Feb. 11, beginning at 8 a.m. and continuing throughout the auction.
The Picasso portfolio features a colophon signed by both Cocteau and Picasso and is expected to bring between $4,000 and $6,000. Other artwork to be sold will be a finely cast bronze by Isidore-Jules Bonheur (est. $5,000-$7,000). A Violet Oakley sketch titled “The Spirit of Ministry” (est. $2,000-$3,000) will also cross the block. The study is one of two Christmas images made for Century Magazine in 1903.
Also featured in this sale will be a massive 204 ozt sterling tray from Goldsmiths and Silversmiths of London, circa 1904 (est. $3,000-$4,000). Jewelry will include a 2.2-carat old mine cut diamond solitaire ring (est. $3,000-$5,000), as well as an antique citrine bracelet (est. $600-$800). Watches will feature an 18-carat and gemstone Bucherer ball watch and 13 vintage wristwatches, including a Rolex Oysterquartz Datejust (est. $1,500-$2,500).
The wide array of collectibles to be offered in this sale will feature an antique fire pumper toy (est. $3,000-$5,000) and a Leica camera outfit (est. $3,000-$5,000). An 1893 Rookwood sterling overlay vase signed by artist John Dibowski will also be sold (est. $2,000-$2,500). In ethnographic items, a Sioux child’s beaded vest with American flags (est. $3,000-$5,000) stands out among a fine collection of baskets, beaded moccasins, and pottery.
American and Continental furniture will also be presented in this one-day sale. The category will include a Victorian marble top table (est. $800-$1,000), as well as a fine French marquetry sideboard (est. $500-$1,000) and a Victorian dental cabinet.
A local clock in the sale is a Jacob and Bernard Hendel tall case clock from Carlisle, Pa. (est. $4,000-$6,000). A Seth Thomas parlor calendar shelf clock #9 (est. $1,000-$1,200), and a Royal Vienna porcelain shelf clock (est. $1,000-$2,000) will also be offered.
